QUEENS — A raging, two-alarm fire broke out in a four-story building in Wavecrest Wednesday evening, just two days after Hurricane Sandy left much of The Rockaways in ruins.

The fire began just before 9 p.m. in the basement of the residential building on Dinsmore Avenue, which houses 37 apartments, and extended to the first and second floors, a fire department spokesman said.

The fire was still burning two hours later, with more than 100 firefighters working to extinguish the blaze, the spokesman said.

As of 11 p.m., one firefighter had suffered minor injuries, but no one else had been hurt, he added.

It wasn’t immediately clear what had sparked the fire, and the spokesman said the cause would be investigated.
