School Bus Flips Over and Slams into Pole in East Harlem Accident

By  Mary Johnson and Ben Fractenberg | October 22, 2012 7:31pm

EAST HARLEM — A school bus flipped onto its side before hitting another vehicle and skidding into a pole in East Harlem late Monday afternoon, officials said.

The bus, operated by the Logan Bus Company, was not carrying children when the accident occurred on East 112th Street near Third Avenue around 3:40 p.m., a fire spokesman said. The driver was sent to Metropolitan Hospital in unknown condition.

One other person was evaluated at the scene but did not receive medical treatment, the spokesman added.

Gustavo Mendez, 23, said he was driving a Fairway delivery van north on Third Avenue and was crossing the intersection at East 112th Street when his van collided with the back of the bus.

Mendez said the bus then turned sharply before toppling over onto its side, skidding into another vehicle and, finally, a pole.

“I tried to brake, but I hit her," Mendez said, referring to the bus driver. "I got so scared. I left the key [in the van] and ran out to make sure there were no kids [in the bus]."

Police said no criminality was suspected in the accident.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education did not immediately know which school the bus was working for on Wednesday.

The Logan Bus Company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
