QUEENS — Two western Queens politicians are revving up new legislation to provide free parking to motorcycles across the city.
Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. and Assemblyman Michael DenDekker were flanked by a group of bikers on the steps of Queens Borough Hall on Thursday to announce new proposals that would make it free to park your motorcycle at any Muni-Meter spot in the city.
"We are not the ‘Sons of Anarchy,’” Vallone said in a statement. “Bikes don’t hog spots, and we are just asking for fairness when it comes to parking in New York City.”
Muni-Meter receipts often blow off a bike's windshield or get stolen by other drivers, the politicians said. That in turn leads to more tickets.
DenDekker recently received a ticket due to the fact that there was no place on his motorcycle to display the receipt, he said
The two politicians, who are both avid riders, said motorcycles are more environmentally friendly than cars, but under current policies, bikers are too often forced to go to court to fight costly tickets. They plan to push for changes in the City Council and State Assembly.
“Instead of making travel in New York City more difficult, time-consuming and expensive, the city should be encouraging all alternative forms of transportation across the five boroughs,” DenDekker said in a statement.
