MANHATTAN — Pizza fanatics can pig out on some of the city's best slices this week while raising cash to feed New York's needy.
More than 30 of the city's top-rated pizza sellers will sling slices in SoHo Wednesday night at Slice Out Hunger, a benefit for the nonprofit City Harvest.
Now in its fourth year, Slice Out Hunger will bring together Difara, Lombardi's, Motorino, Joe's Pizza and other city pie makers at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Shrine Church of St. Anthony of Padua, which is located at 154 Sullivan St. at West Houston Street.
"The whole point of Slice Out Hunger is to use New York City's obsession with food to raise money for people who need it," organizer Scott Wiener of Scott's Pizza Tours said in a video promoting the event.
After 220 pies sold out in 61 minutes last year, the restaurants participating in this year's feast will bring more pizzas on Wednesday than ever before. Wiener said he expected more than 450 pies to last no more than two hours.
"Once we open the doors, the pizza starts flying," he said.
Last year's Slice Out Hunger raised nearly $5,000 for City Harvest, which gives unsold food from city restaurants to people in need.
One-dollar tokens will be sold at the door Wedneday and can be used to purchase one slice of pizza, a Fizzy Lizzy soda or a raffle ticket, according to the event's website.
The pizza-oriented raffle prizes include an in-house pizza party with Adam Kuban, the founder of Slice, the pizza blog on food website Serious Eats. Kuban will cook for the winner and their friends. The winner will then get to review the meal on Slice and tell the world how Kuban did.
An afternoon with Louis Coluccio, the owner of celebrated A.L.C. Italian Grocery in Bay Ridge, will also be raffled off.
"The winner will get to go with him to pizzerias he loves, and then go on a shopping spree in his store," Wiener said.
"Everything about the night will be for people who really love pizza."
