Homeless Man Attacked in McCarren Park

By Meredith Hoffman | October 3, 2012 4:23pm

WILLIAMSBURG — A homeless man was brutally attacked in McCarren Park early Tuesday morning, cops said.

The man was struck with a beer bottle near a picnic table at 4 a.m., the 94th Precinct's commanding officer, Deputy Inspector Terence Hurson, said.

"We found him bleeding from the head and unconscious...on Bedford Avenue next to Dunkin' Donuts," Hurson said of the corner with Lorimer Street.

"We followed the blood trail into McCarren Park to a bench and discovered a broken beer bottle in a puddle of blood," Hurson said. "We still haven't been able to identify him but he appeared to be homeless," Hurson said of the victim.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, and the investigation is ongoing, Hurson noted.

The assault — first reported by the blog A Walk in the Park — followed multiple incidents of violence at the park in recent months, including the stabbing of a teen to near-death this July and a string of incidents at McCarren Pool this summer.

Tuesday's attack also came just days after advocates announced they would finally be opening a shelter for Greenpoint's local homeless, who often sleep in McCarren and McGolrick Parks.
