'Cheri Mode' Style Seen on Fall's Fashion Darlings

By Patrick Michael Hughes | September 19, 2012 1:18pm

MANHATTAN — Fashion darlings donning chambray, leather and volume knits are setting the pace for early fall with their "cheri mode" style.

From a rising fashion star to an international couture stylist, Street Chic has observed the look — similar to the "urban demoiselle" style found this summer — marching confidently through city streets.

Chambray shirts, leather dresses, trapunto peplum details, volume knits and attention-grabbing hair colors fleshed out the trend, which coincides with the fading warmth and onset of autumn.

For example, an ensemble comprised of an un-pressed chambray blouse, damask print denim jeans by Paige and a classic pair of Salvatore Ferragamo bow pumps struck a very ladylike pose on LaGuardia Place.

Similarly, the washed chambray look was seen on fashion designer Carly Cushnie of Cushnie et Ochs in SoHo. Street Chic chatted with her about her September 29 collection showing in Paris, where she and design partner Michelle Ochs were chosen for the CFDA/Vogue “American in Paris" program.

Leather apparel beyond jackets and coats has made inroads in the fashion world for the past few seasons. We thought a take on the "Annie Hall" look spotted in SoHo was quite eye-catching when styled with a textured, over-the-knee leather pencil skirt and an un-pressed three-quarter-length sleeve blouse.

The leather dress is also a look being hailed as a fashion statement for fall. Elena Moussa, a fashion stylist whose work has appeared in numerous international editions of the haute-couture publication L’Officiel, was spotted at New York Fashion Week in a black leather turtleneck dress.

Muted and monochromatic colors were also part of the urban feel of "cheri mode." Fitted princess-line sheaths from Philosophy by Alberta Ferretti — featuring tailored sleeves and knit neckline details in putty tones — were wonderfully paired with chunky, distressed leather and suede ankle boots.

Little black looks by Helmut Lang on fashion assistant Anabelle Netter showed off the brand’s tailored fall 2012 looks of a single-button jacket and three-quarter sleeves with a triangular detail.

We also took notice of the colorful, attention-grabbing hair statements of "Cheri mode" that have been spotted in the Spring 2013 collections of Anna Sui and Oscar de la Renta.
