Family Members of Man Killed in Fort Greene Building Collapse Located

By Janet Upadhye | September 14, 2012 11:00am

FORT GREENE -The three-day search for the family members of Winston Gillett, 67, who was killed in a building collapse in Fort Greene, is over.

Councilwoman Letitia James conducted the search using traditional and social media and located Gillett’s next-of-kin in Florida, Patch reported.  The family is expected to travel to New York to claim Gillett’s body.

A single candle burns next to a plastic cup holding a sip of liquor on top of cinder blocks where the collapse occurred at 227 Carlton Ave in remembrance of Gillett.  The makeshift memorial remains nearly five days after he was killed in the rubble.   Fort Greene neighbors have passed by throughout the week to pay their respects.

The roof of the building where Gillett worked crumbled Monday morning leaving Gillett and Clayton LaBoard, 43, trapped under the wreckage in the basement. LaBoard was injured and remains in critical condition, reported Patch.

An investigation into the collapse is ongoing, and a  Department of Buildings representative said the department is in the process of issuing violations.
