COBBLE HILL — Sahadi’s is closing for a week for an expansion that will tie in three storefronts, and offer new installations like a new coffee bar and an extended cheese station.

Sahadi’s, a Middle Eastern grocery located at 187 Atlantic Ave., will close for renovations for the first time in the more than 60 years it's been open, but the owner says he is hoping his customers will appreciate more products and a tidier store.

“We’re not recreating the store,” said Charlie Sahadi, co-owner of the grocery. “We’re expanding and offering a neater and cleaner store with more departments.”

The store will be closing from Sept. 17-23, and will be sporting a new paint job, new lights, and new refrigerators, Sahadi said. The grocery couldn’t offer customers more products, noted the owner, because there wasn’t any room.

“We’re hoping that 75-80 percent of the changes will be ready for the reopening,” Sahadi said. “They’ll be some exciting changes and I hope our customers will like them.

Once the store reopens, Sahadi’s staff will be on hand to give tours of the new store layout, Sahadi explained.

“Many of the departments will be moved around," he said.  "It will be an adjustment for the staff and for the customers.”

The grocery’s next challenge is to have the kitchen ready in time for the upcoming Atlantic Antic event, which is expected to take place on the avenue on Sept. 30.

“The electrician, the painters, the floor cleaners are all here,” said Sahadi. “We’ve been working from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., trying to get everything done.

"We always open for the Atlantic Antic, and we have to be prepared in the kitchen, and I think we will.”
