DOWNTOWN — The NYPD's bomb squad investigated a suspicious package Wednesday in a Broadway building that houses government offices, police sources said.
Emergency response units raced to 250 Broadway — home to offices for the New York City Housing Authority, the City Council and across the street from City Hall — about 12:45 p.m., the FDNY said.
Scores of workers had to be evacuated from the building, officials said.
"The building is closed," a security guard told workers. "Go to an emergency evacuation spot."
City Councilman James Vacca, who represents parts of The Bronx, was one of the many government employees and elected officials milling around outside the building.
"You always want to be dilligent. I'd rather be on the safe side," Vacca, a Democrat, said.
Besides, "it's a nice day, too," he added.
A police source at the scene said building staffers at the loading dock on Murray Street discovered the package. The street was subsequently closed off with caution tape for about two hours.
Investigators determined that the package was a Blackberry tablet in a box, a police source said.
Authorities reopened the streets about 2 p.m.
Representatives from NYCHA and the City Council did not immediately return requests for comment.
