BROOKLYN — Construction workers finished cleanup on Tuesday in preparation for Department of Buildings inspectors to visit the site of a roof collapse at a Fort Greene building that left one worker dead and another seriously injured on Monday morning.
The cleanup crew is currently working under the supervision of the DOB, which issued an official stop-work order pertaining to all five buildings in the complex after the top floor of the structure at 227 Carlton Ave. crumbled under the weight of building materials being offloaded on Monday morning.
"We're just clearing out debris so city inspectors can come in," said one worker, who would not give his name.
The men began clearing damaged building material from the site around 7 a.m. on Tuesday and expected to be out of the site by mid-afternoon.
According to the Department of Buildings, five workers were on the roof of the building as it gave way under the weight of new building materials that had been hoisted onto the top floor on Monday.
"It sounded like an airplane crash. It was that loud," said neighbor Gil McGarvey, 68, who rushed outside when he heard the commotion.
He said he saw the truck that had offloaded the materials take off down the street as the building collapsed.
"Before emergency vehicles got here, he just drove off," McGarvey said.
An investigation into the collapse is ongoing, and a spokesperson for the DOB said the department is in the process of issuing violations.
Professional Grade Construction said the company will not be issuing a statement regarding the accident.
