Public Invited To View Plans For Underground Park In Lower East Side

LOWER EAST SIDE – The public will get a chance to see some of the plans for the Lower East Side’s subterranean answer to the High Line: a proposed underground park in an abandoned trolley terminal dubbed the "Lowline."

From Sept. 15 to 27, the project’s organizers are hosting a public exhibit highlighting the plans for the Lowline in a warehouse at Essex and Broome streets. The exhibit will highlight the technological approaches to illuminate the park and several other research presentations.

“We will show that the Lowline is not only possible, but will be sustainable as a viable community organization over the longer term,” said Dan Barasch, a co-founder for the project in a press release about the event.

The Lowline has been proposed as a lush underground park in an old transit hub that draws light from street level through a series of mirrors.

The project has been met with widespread support. Community Board 3’s land use committee recently voted to unanimously support the project for its innovative use of green technology to the benefit of the public.

A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the project has already raised $50,000 higher than their original goal of $100,000.
