QUEENS — Port Authority police arrested a passenger waiting to board an American Airlines plane at John F. Kennedy Airport who went through an unauthorized door onto a ramp to smoke a cigarette Thursday, authorities said.

Charges were still pending against Wilfrid Isidore, 42, of Spring Valley, N.Y., a Port Authority spokesman said, explaining how the passenger waiting at Terminal 8's Gate 14 about 3 p.m. slipped out onto the ramp where passengers board.

As he was about to light up in the restricted area, American Airlines workers approached him. But instead of heeding them, Isidore allegedly "took off," the Port Authority spokesman said.

Workers caught him at Gate 6 where they waited for the Port Authority police to apprehend the fleeing smoker.

"There was nothing more nefarious [going on]," the Port Authority spokesman said.

It was not immediately clear what flight Isidore was slated to catch.

American Airlines declined to comment.
