Rockettes Melt Hearts with 'Christmas in August' Performance

By Mary Johnson | August 14, 2012 3:01pm

MIDTOWN — There was snow on Sixth Avenue in front of Radio City Music Hall on Tuesday, but it wasn't some freak weather event.

Instead it was the Rockettes "Christmas in August" celebration — complete with faux snow — kicking off the dance troupe's 85th year.

The event, which briefly closed down Sixth Avenue between West 50th and 51st streets, began with a fashion show featuring a variety of costumes the Rockettes have worn over the years.

The looks ranged from the infamous toy soldier ensemble to the reindeer costume worn for the show's opening number to the Rockettes' version of the little black dress.

Santa made an appearance, as did Rockette alumnae, who cheered from a front-row viewing section.

And shortly before snow began raining down on the dancers from machines attached to the awning of Radio City Music Hall, the dance troupe performed for the crowd.

Sue Citarelli, of Long Island, brought her son, Anthony, 13, and three of his friends to check out the "Christmas in August" event on Tuesday.

Citarelli said she and her family come to see the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular every year.

"It's so much fun," she said.

The boys, who were all wearing Santa hats, agreed.

"I'm in Christmas mode already," said Brendan Malin, 13.

The 2012 Radio City Christmas Spectacular will run from Nov. 9 through Dec. 30. Tickets are now on sale online, and they range in price from $46 to $250.
