Former Mayor Ed Koch Endorses Grace Meng for Congress

By Nigel Chiwaya | August 14, 2012 1:47pm

QUEENS—Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch gave Assemblywoman Grace Meng his blessing Monday, endorsing the Queens Democrat's run for the sixth congressional district seat.

The nod comes after Meng defeated Assemblyman Rory Lancman in June's democratic primary election. Koch had endorsed Lancman prior to the election.

“Grace Meng is unequivocally the strongest candidate to maintain strong U.S. relations with the State of Israel,” Koch said in a statement, reported by the New York Observer.

“Grace has demonstrated a deep understanding of the nature of Israel’s struggle in its corner of the world and why it’s so important for Israeli and American interests and global security that the United States stands in support of her.”

Meng, from Flushing, is running against Whitestone Republican city Councilman Daniel Halloran for the congressional seat.

Halloran is currently in Israel, completing a four-day trip during which he met with Israeli leaders and military cadets.
