BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn man was killed half a block from his home and three other people were injured when a sport utility vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver slammed into a private sanitation truck in Bensonhurst early Wednesday, the NYPD said.

The Jeep SUV, which had two occupants, crashed with the garbage truck at 20th Avenue and 61st Street just after 2 a.m., police said.

The impact knocked the garbage truck on its side, sources said.

The collision killed John Larocca, 45, who was a passenger in the SUV and lived barely 400 feet from the scene of the crash, police said.

The driver of the SUV, Russell Schofield, 44, was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Police later charged Schofield with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated, among other charges.

Two sanitation workers were also taken to Lutheran Medical Center in stable condition, police said.
