LOWER EAST SIDE — A knife-wielding suspect who barricaded himself in a Madison Street apartment was taken into custody after keeping dozens of cops at bay for more than two hours, police said.

Emergency workers rushed to 197 Madison St. at 9:20 a.m. after receiving a report of a man who had fallen from the suspect's second-floor apartment.

"The first guy jumps out of the window and lands on his feet," said witness Francisco Gerena, 39, who lives on the Lower East Side. "He was holding his head."

Cops from the NYPD's hostage, emergency services and technical assistance response units mobilized at the apartment and were able to end the standoff some time after noon.

The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to New York Downtown Hospital, fire officials said. His condition was unknown, a spokesman said.

He was not immediately charged, police said.

The man who fell from the window was taken to Bellevue Hospital for back pain.

The circumstances leading to the fall were not immediately known.
