BROOKLYN — A man was gunned down steps from his East Flatbush home late Monday, the NYPD said.
Jawaad Muhammad, 23, was shot in the torso in front of 852 E. 37th St. just after 11:30 p.m., police said. He was about 200 feet from his home, police said.
"It was four shots — bang, bang, bang, bang," said neighbor Leslie Destine, 66, a retired taxi driver who said he heard the gunfire as he watched television.
"I heard somebody say, 'Somebody got killed,' and I looked and saw the body on the sidewalk. The cops were all over the place and people were screaming like hell."
Muhammad was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he died, police said.
Neighbor Shawn Smith, 26, who said he had known Muhammad for 10 years, remembered him as an easygoing man who kept to himself.
"He was a cool guy," Smith said. "He didn't look for any trouble. He wasn't in any gangs. He was just a normal kid going about his business."
Police sources said the shooting may have stemmed from a fight over a basketball game.
The investigation is ongoing, and cops were seen canvassing the block on Tuesday.
"I've been living here for over 30 years, and this is a nice neighborhood," Destine said.
"I don't believe something like that happened over here."
