STATEN ISLAND — The Staten Island Zoo has gotten a patriotic new resident in time for the Fourth.
A 7-year-old female bald eagle, which has an amputated left wing, is the latest addition to an outdoor exhibit near the West Brighton zoo's entrance on Broadway, officials said.
Because of her wing, the eagle no longer can fly, but will still be perched at the new exhibit for all to see.
The eagle came from the Oglebay Zoo in West Virginia, where she was being rehabilitated from her injuries, before coming to Staten Island, according to zoo representatives.
Her wing was amputated after she injured it flying into a transformer.
Caretakers will feed the eagle a diet of salmon, rats and herring, and Staten Islanders can expect to see her for a long time.
Eagles generally live up to 20 to 30 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity, zoo officials noted..
