NEW YORK CITY — Two NYPD officers who were slain in the line of duty in Brooklyn last year were each posthumously awarded the department’s highest decoration — the Medal of Honor — on Tuesday.
Police Officer Alain Schaberger, who was pushed to his death off a Boerum Hill stoop last May, and Detective Peter Figsoki, who was shot to death in East New York in December, were among 42 members of the NYPD honored in the annual Medal Day Ceremony.
“Today we recognize the finest of the Finest — saluting some of the men and women who went above and beyond in answering the call of duty and responded bravely, judiciously and heroically in circumstances of extreme danger,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“Sadly, today we also honor two of New York’s Finest who we lost, dying valiantly in the line of duty.”
Family members accepted the awards on behalf of the two slain officers.
Figoski’s partner, Detective Glenn Estrada, captured Figoski’s alleged killer and was awarded the Medal for Valor — the NYPD’s third highest honor — at the ceremony Tuesday.
