MANHATTAN — Children's clothing found in the home of alleged Etan Patz killer Pedro Hernandez were too large to fit the 6-year-old boy who went missing 33 years ago, DNAinfo has learned.
Sources added that the clothing did not match any of the items Etan was wearing May 25, 1979, the day he disappeared — a black pilot cap, a blue corduroy jacket, blue pants, and blue sneakers with fluorescent stripes.
“The clothes are too f-ing big and could not fit [Etan],” a law enforcement told “On The Inside."
Investigators found a toy — a Matchbox car — in Hernandez’s Maple Shade, N.J., home during a search on Thursday, and they believe it belonged to Hernandez or one of his many young relatives, perhaps even his daughter.
More importantly, the miniature auto was likely manufactured within the last 33 years, sources said.
Investigators were planning on contacting the toy manufacturer to determine exactly when it was produced, and checking it and the clothing for DNA in the faint chance that it could produce a link to Patz.
Hernandez, a delusional schizophrenic, has “confessed” that he killed Patz, but has provided virtually no hards clues to support his story other than saying he lured the child to the basement of a bodega where he worked at the time, strangled him and then threw the body in a box, which he placed in the trash.
He provided no motive for the slaying other than saying he had an “urge” to suddenly kill a child he had never seen before.
When cops interviewed him, he confessed to the crime and then was shown a photo of Etan on which he signed his name and wrote that he strangled him, sources said.
Hernandez’s lawyer maintains that his client, who has never been arrested before, is merely inventing his role to the 33-year old case.
Over the years, he occasionally told relatives and others that he killed a child in New York and following a recent dig by the FBI in SoHo someone contacted the NYPD with a tip about Hernandez.
Hernandez is currently under psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue Hospital following his arraignment on murder charges.
