Cops Hunt Astoria Jewelry Store Robbers

QUEENS — Police released video of two men who sliced open a glass display case and snatched a handful of jewels from an Astoria jewelry store in April.

The heist began Monday, April 13, at about 5:10 p.m., police said, when the two suspects entered Yogi Lala Jewelers at 30-07 Steinway St. and stood side-by-side at one of the display cases, police said.

While one of the men talked with an employee at the store, the other cut through the case and swiped a handful of jewelry, police said.

The video shows one man talking and pointing, while his accomplice — apparently wearing a collared shirt and sweater — pulls out a wallet and starts piling cash on the top of the case. As he goes through the bills, the first man appears to pull open the front of the case, grabs a row of jewels mounted on a white display, places them inside his jacket, and replaces the case's glass front.

One of the men was about 50 years old, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds and bald, police said. His accomplice was about 30, stood 6 feet tall and weighed 200 pounds, with a Caesar hair style.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspects are asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS (8477). Members of the public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, or by texting tips to CRIMES (274637), then entering TIP577.
