MANHATTAN — A loose tile stopped traffic in the Holland Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon, Port Authority officials said.

Shortly before 3:15 p.m., the Port Authority was alerted that a tile that had fallen out of one of the walls in the New Jersey-bound side of the Holland Tunnel.

Port Authority police stopped traffic so a member of the agency's maintenance team could check the wall's condition.

Once it was determined that the wall was safe, traffic was allowed to pass through the tunnel again, at 3:40 p.m. — just in time for rush hour.
