BENSONHURST — An angry passenger on a D train escalated a verbal dispute with another passenger Thursday night, when he sprayed the woman, and her baby, with pepper spray, police said.

The FDNY said a call came in at 7:20 p.m. from New Utrecht Avenue and 79th Street in Brooklyn, where a woman on the train had dropped her baby when a man assaulted her with a can of mace.

According to police, he and the woman had gotten into an argument on the train. When he pepper sprayed her, she dropped her child, but the infant also was maced.

Rescuers responded to the scene at the 79th Street MTA subway station, where the victims were loaded into ambulances and transported to Lutheran Medical Center.

Police said both the mother and the infant were in stable condition, and the man involved in the dispute had been arrested and was in police custody.

No further information was available immediately, but an investigation is ongoing.
