GOVERNORS ISLAND — These cute kids need names.
The Trust for Governors Island is asking for the public's help in naming two adorable baby goats that will spend the summer at the island's composting center, munching on discarded vegetable scraps.
"We are turning to you for your suggestions," Governors Island staff posted on the island's blog Tuesday. "What do you think?"
The Long Island-born female goats are just 6 weeks old and are still being hand-fed bottles of milk, but soon they will be chowing down on all the food the park's visitors leave behind, along with stray branches, leaves and weeds around their paddock at the Earth Matter Compost Learning Center, the island's staff said.
One goat is a Saanen-Nubian mix and the other is a La Mancha, according to the trust. They are on loan from Goodale Farms on Long Island.
The goats will join the chickens, worms and bees that already make their summer home at Governors Island's composting center.
The public will be able to meet the goats when Governors Island reopens for the season this Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with ferries running regularly from Lower Manhattan's Battery Maritime Building, 10 South St.
