BROOKLYN NAVY YARD — A new green-focused manufacturing center will bring nearly 300 new jobs to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other officials announced Friday.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation will invest $46 million in the new facility, which will transform three World War II era U.S. Navy machine shops into a "state-of-the-art industrial complex," according to a statement from the governor's office.

Construction on the new manufacturing center will start this summer and is expected to take about 18 months. The project will create 400 construction jobs. The 220,000 square foot facility will have two main tenants: Crye Precision, which makes body armor and apparel for the U.S. military, and New Lab, a "co-design" and green technology manufacturing space.

After more than $200 million in infrastructure investments from city, state and federal sources over the past several years, the 300-acre industrial park at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is now home to 275 businesses that employ 6,000 workers.

"The Navy Yard is a testament to New York City’s resilience and creativity," said New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. "Through thoughtful redevelopment efforts, what was once a thriving shipbuilding facility is now a model urban industrial park that houses some of the City’s most cutting edge companies, and now soon, a Green Manufacturing Center."
