Man Arrested in Washington Heights Supermarket Robbery

MANHATTAN — A Bronx man was arrested Monday for robbing a Washington Heights supermarket at gunpoint last month.

John Sapp, 54, was charged in the April 16 heist at the Gristedes on Broadway and 170th Street.

Sapp, who police said has salt-and-pepper hair and beard, entered the store at about 7:40 p.m. and approached the cashier, asking for change of a $5 bill, police said.  When the cashier opened the register, Sapp pulled out a handgun and demanded money, police said. He fled the store on foot with $430 and headed northbound on Broadway, police said.

Sapp has been charged with robbery, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of stolen property.
