Met Costume Gala to Get Oscar Treatment with Live Red Carpet Coverage

By Amy Zimmer | May 1, 2012 11:12am

MANHATTAN — For the first time, the Met Costume Institute Benefit — one of the city's most glamorous nights of the year to see and be seen — will be getting Oscar-worthy treatment.

The red carpet arrivals at this year's event will be live-streamed online Monday, May 7, hosted by "Vogue" journalist William Norwich and model (and Isabella Rosselini's daughter) Elettra Wiedemann.

The gala's co-chairs — actress Carey Mulligan, designer Miuccia Prada and "Vogue" editrix Anna Wintour — will give interviews along with celebs and society fixtures.

Wiedemann and Norwich will give a sneak peak into the world of prepping for the gala that day on the Celebs on Facebook page, and they will be opening up the floor Twitter-Town-Hall-style to bring viewers into the action. The hosts will pick five questions from viewer submissions on Twitter — with the hashtag #MetQuestions— during the broadcast to ask the elaborately coiffed and costumed stars at the gala.

The broadcast will also include a pre-taped segment on the Met's corresponding exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations, which will run from May 10 through Aug. 19, and will look at how these two Italian designers, Elsa Schiaparelli and Prada though from different eras, were kindred spirits.

Australian film director Baz Luhrmann, of "Moulin Rouge" fame, will be the exhibition’s creative consultant and the producer of the gala's benefit.

The live feed will be streamed on "Vogue," Amazon.com/Fashion and Metropolitan Museum websites from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The benefit is the main source of annual funding for exhibitions, operations, and capital improvements for The Costume Institute, Met officials said.
