MANHATTAN — The hit musical "Once" topped the list of nominations for this year's Tony Awards, which were announced Tuesday.
The play, about an Irish street musician and his relationship with a Czech immigrant in Dublin, earned 11 nominations, the most of any performance.
Actors James Earl Jones, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cynthia Nixon and John Lithgow received nominations for best performance by an actor/actress in a leading role, joining fellow nominees Frank Langella, Stockard Channing and Tracie Bennett.
Musicals "The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" each garnered 10 nominations, while the Peter Pan-based play "Peter and the Starcatcher" earned nine.
The musicals "Follies" and Disney’s "Newsies" each received eight nominations.
Hoffman was picked for his performance in Arthur Miller’s "Death of a Salesman," Jones for "Gore Vidal’s The Best Man," Nixon for "Wit," Lithgow for "The Columnist," Langella for "Man and Boy" and Channing for "Other Desert Cities."
The 66th Tony Awards will take place on June 10 at the Beacon Theatre on Broadway, with actor Neil Patrick Harris set to host.
