The Detroit Tigers placed outfielder Delmon Young on the restricted list Saturday, one day after he was arrested for allegedly drunkenly attacking an Illinois man while shouting anti-Semitic slurs outside the team's hotel, according to a report on MLB.com.
Young, 26, was charged with aggravated assault as a hate crime. He was arraigned Friday evening in New York City Supreme Court and released on $5,000 bail. He declined to speak with reporters.
"We are aware of the situation, however it is our club policy not to comment on pending legal matters," the Tigers stated in a press release Friday. "Per a provision in the Major League Baseball Basic Agreement, any allegation that involves alcohol is referred to the MLB's Employee Assistance Program." The Basic Agreement is the league's collective-bargaining agreement with the Players Association.
Athletes placed on the restricted list do not count toward their teams' 25- or 40-man rosters. In some cases, MLB.com reports, they are not paid. Young, in his sixth year in the major leagues and in town for his team's three-game series against the Yankees, is set to earn about $6.7 million this season, according to ESPN.com. He did not play in the series opener Friday night.
Young was arrested shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday outside the Hilton Hotel on Sixth Avenue at West 54th Street, police and prosecutors said. The ballplayer, allegedly "heavily intoxicated," was standing outside the hotel when he saw a panhandler wearing a yarmulke ask money from a group of Chicago tourists.
"You bunch of f—ing Jews!" Young reportedly shouted, attracting the attention of Jason Shank, 32, an Illinois businessman, and three friends, who had just given the panhandler some cash.
The group, in town for a bachelor party according to the New York Post, confronted Young, and Shank and Young began shoving each other, prosecutors said. Young tackled Shank, but the scuffle was quickly broken up, with Shank escaping with a scratched, bleeding arm.
Shank declined medical attention. Young was taken to Roosevelt Hospital for evaluation.
