STATEN ISLAND — A woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday night after pushing her grandson out of the way of the vehicle as they were coming home from church in Port Richmond, according to police and reports.

The victim, 57-year-old Clara Almazo, was crossing Cary Avenue near Elizabeth Street about 9:52 p.m. when a 2005 Ford Escape traveling westbound struck her, causing severe body trauma, police and reports said.

She reportedly pushed her 8-year-old grandson out of the way of the speeding vehicle before being struck. Almazo was taken to Richmond University Medical Center and pronounced dead, police said.

The driver Brian McGurk, 40, of Westerleigh, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

Almazo, originally from Mexico, leaves behind six children and multiple grandchildren, the Daily News reported.
