FLATLANDS — A fire broke out at a bakery on Utica Avenue Friday afternoon, killing a cat at an adjacent grocery store, authorities and witnesses said.

Firefighters were called to the scene of the blaze, Pita Express at 1708 Utica Ave. near Avenue I, about 3:44 p.m., the FDNY said.

The fire ripped through the bakery and also filled the grocery store next door with smoke, leaving a cat inside dead, workers said. No people were injured in the blaze.

"It was too fast, we got out of there," explained Louis Davila, who works at the adjacent store, Tu Bohio Grocery Corp.

A worker at Pita Express said the bakery operates overnight and that the store was closed at the time of the fire.

Twelve units and 65 firefighters responded to the scene to battle the blaze, the FDNY said.

It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire.
