MANHATTAN — Parents have less than a day to get their kindergarten applications in.

Applications for this fall's kindergarten seats are due Friday afternoon, and those who miss the deadline may not get a spot at their preferred school.

Families should visit their zoned school to apply in person, bringing the child's birth certificate or passport and at least two proofs of residence.

Families can also apply to additional elementary schools, outside of their zone, though they will only get a spot if there is extra space available.

The one exception to this policy is District 1, which covers the Lower East Side, East Village and part of Chinatown and does not have any zoned schools. Families in District 1 fill out a central application listing which of the district's 17 elementary schools they would like to attend.

The Department of Education will notify all parents the week of March 19 about where their child has been accepted, and then parents must pre-register their child at that school between March 26 and April 20.
