MANHATTAN — A trial date has been set for one of the eight men accused in the bullying death of Chinatown soldier Pvt. Danny Chen.

Sgt. Travis Carden's court martial will start on April 4 in a U.S. military court in Afghanistan, according to an Army spokesman.

Carden, 25, is facing charges including maltreatment, assault and reckless endangerment.

Chen died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Oct. 3 while serving in Afghanistan after enduring months of hazing.

The eight men who served with Chen are accused of taunting him with racial slurs and committing physical abuse. The day he killed himself, his fellow officers allegedly threw rocks at him while he was forced to crawl across gravel.

There are no dates set yet for the trials of the other seven suspects, Army officials said.
