Bipolar Woman Who Threw Baby Into Hudson River to Be Reunited with Family

By DNAinfo Staff on February 10, 2012 9:10pm

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A bipolar mom who threw her baby into the Hudson River while suffering a psychotic breakdown will go back to her native India and be reunited with her children, a judge decided Friday.

Devi Silvia, 34, has been undergoing treatment and entered into an insanity plea deal in December with prosecutors, who agreed that she was not guilty "by reason of mental disease or defect," following the attempted murder-suicide in 2010.

Silvia's baby, Jessica, who was 19 months old when she was thrown into the frigid river off a West 70th Street pier, was rescued by authorities, who quickly responded and saved both Silvia and the child after the mother jumped in too.

At her sentencing Friday, Silvia was told she must continue treatment, stay on her medication and and provide status reports to the court.

She has not been allowed to see her two children, including the daughter she nearly drowned, since her arrest after the May 11, 2010, incident.

The children have been staying with family in India after Silvia was ordered byt the court to stay away from them.

The family had been living on the Upper West Side after Silvia's husband took a job in New York.

The mother admitted she threw her child into the water after a dispute with her husband.
