BROOKLYN — The death of a 3-year-old Bedford-Stuyvesant girl last month was ruled a homicide by police Tuesday after the city medical examiner determined the child died of asphyxiation.
Cathryn Nwegbo, 3, was found dead inside of 1078 Putnam Ave. on Jan. 6 about 4 a.m. after police responded to reports of a person on the roof of the building, the NYPD and medical examiner said.
The child's mother, Brandis Nwegbo, 29, who has not been charged in the death, was reportedly discovered holding the bloodied baby and speaking incoherently.
Officers followed a trail of blood to Nwegbo's fourth-floor apartment when no one was found on the building's roof, WCBS reported.
Cops entered the apartment and reportedly discovered Nwegbo holding her child, who had cuts to her face and neck, police said.
She was rushed to Woodhill Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police added.
Nwegbo was taken into custody and under went psychiatric evaluation, police said.
Cops were not immediately certain of Nwegbo's current whereabouts, and the investigation is ongoing.
