Man Attacks Mother and 9-Year-Old Brother With Hammer, Police Say Updated February 1, 2012 8:20pm

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT —  A troubled man was arrested early Wednesday morning after attacking his 45-year-old mother and 9-year-old brother with a hammer in their Brooklyn home, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

The boy was in critical condition at Kings County Hospital and the mother was in stable condition after the alleged attack on Marcy Avenue and Madison Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Police are still not sure of a motive, but Kelly said the man may have a "mental history."

The man, whose name was not released, is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation NY1 reported.
