BRONX — A fire that broke out shortly after midnight Thursday in Morris Heights killed one man and injured four others, officials said.

It took 60 firefighters about an hour to battle the blaze at GC International, a recording studio for Spanish artists, at 1538 Plimpton Ave., fire and police officials said. Two of the firefighters suffered minor injuries, officials said.

A 27-year-old man, whose name was not released pending family notification, was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he died, police said.

Denally Martinez, 19, said he knew all of the victims, including the young man who died.

"He was a really nice kid," he said.

A 21-year-old man suffered severe burns, police said, and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical but stable condition. A 37-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition with burns to her right hand, police said.

Two men, ages 47 and 42, were also injured, officials said. The older man suffered a cut to the arm and was taken to Lincoln Hospital, police said. The younger victim was transported to Bronx Lebanon Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze, but it does not appear suspicious, police said.
