MIDTOWN — A smoldering transformer in a Midtown office building forced the evacuation of 35 people early Monday just as people were showing up for work, officials said.

The FDNY said the underground transformer at Broadway and W. 45th St. cause smoke to seep in through the basement of Toys 'R' Us at 1530 Broadway.

About 9 a.m., the people were forced to leave the building. The workers who were evacuated were not hurt, fire officials said.

The cause was under investigation, and emergency officials were still on scene and testing for carbon monoxide levels an hour later.
