MANHATTAN — Several people reported being sick and one was taken to the hospital because of leaking gas at a Chelsea construction site Friday morning, authorities said.

Construction workers hit a heating pipe, causing the leak at 135 W. 30th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, about 11:18 a.m., one of the workers said.

A group of people reported getting sick as a result, and one was sent to New York Hospital with minor injuries, the fire department said.

The situation was brought under control a short time later, the authorities added.

"It smelled like chemicals and death," said Andrea Wilnson, 34, who lives in one of the nearby condos. "We left right away. I did not want to come back for at least hour. That's how rank it was."
