Winter White Fashion Brightens Up Seasonal Blues

MANHATTAN — There might not be any of the white stuff on the ground, but the streets of Manhattan are glowing this season, with winter whites featuring prominently on the streets.

This fashion trend has come directly from the pre-fall 2012 collections that were shown in New York in late 2011, and the strongest of these were in the soft, draped, layered looks of designer doo.ri and the boxy square cut layers of Phillip Lim.

On the streets of Manhattan, the winter whites ranged from tailored, feminine silouhettes to sculptural minimalism, and the emerging spring 2012 trend of utility details. Street Chic noticed bright white ultilitarian quilted silouhettes in maxi-coat lengths, paired with furry hats, and layered, hip-length ski resort looks with textured cardigans or a Burberry scarf. There were distinctively shaped and proportioned quilted coats with fitted waistlines and flattering A-line skirts.

From boiled wool to heavy shearling, the sidewalks were awash in white knee-length coats, lightweight top coats, heavy hooded jackets and feminine parkas.

Whites were layered with zippered vests lined in fur and often accentuated a major 2012 trend — the shaped, boxy, square cut with zipper or double breasted buttons, which is a silouhette inspired by vintage haute couture from the early 1960s.
