Fur, Either Fake or Real, is Hot This Winter

By Della Hasselle | January 4, 2012 7:16am

MIDTOWN — After the temperature plummeted this week, fashionable New Yorkers were left struggling to look like something other than a walking sleeping bag, and many reached for their fur — either fake or real.

While some city venues have taken a stand against patrons wearing the controversial material this winter, the dramatic drop in temperatures had Midtown residents and visitors pulling out their fur boots, hats and hitting the streets.

"I think my little furry hat is the most fashionable thing that I'm wearing at the moment to try and keep warm in this bitter cold weather," said Caroline Payne, 29, of England. Besides her faux fur hat, she was also wearing a thermal heat layer, a vest, a sweater and a coat bundled under her tan scarf.

Other pedestrians were spotted in fake fur cuffs lining suede coats, leopard and cowprint ear muffs and mink coats.

For Midtown resident and actress Ana Maria Rosen, fake fur was best worn on the tops and bottoms of the body for maximum effect, but she said she would never wear real fur because she doesn't "believe in animal cruelty."

British tourist Megan Kemp, 22, wore a faux leopard skin headpiece wrapped around her head, and was very happy with her look. There was one accessory she'd abandoned due to the cold, however.

"I'm quite liking fingerless gloves," she said. "But they're not quite warm enough for today."
