Inwood Holiday Market Supports Area Artists

By Carla Zanoni | December 1, 2011 9:35am

INWOOD — Uptown residents are taking a neighborly approach to holiday shopping this year as they prepare to stock up on gifts at the second annual Inwood Holiday Market.

Sponsored by Bread and Yoga, Inwood’s “community focused yoga studio,” the event is set to feature at least 16 local artists and vendors three consecutive weekends this December.

Shoppers will be treated to an array of “original, handmade gifts with a strong neighborhood feel” made and items including jewelry, artwork, t-shirts, bags, baked goods, kids art supplies, toys, pottery, spa products and more, according to organizers.

“This is an initiative to create a neighborhood holiday shopping experience and to spark local economy,” said owner Marcela Xavier in a public release about the only holiday market held in Inwood.

Xavier said she is excited to introduce new artists and vendors to introduce “local talent and resources to residents in the community.”

Last year’s first holiday market was considered a success with 15 local merchants selling items like jewelry, artwork featuring Washington Heights and Inwood, T-shirts, bags, baked goods, kids art supplies and lingerie.

“I did so much of my shopping uptown last year and can’t wait to bring my family some of that uptown love this year,” said Washington Heights resident Graciela Mumford, 36.
