MANHATTAN — A homeless man beat an elderly woman with a wooden plank on a Murray Hill street Saturday evening, sources said.

Andre Lineaux, 51, approached the 74-year-old victim as she walked on Madison Avenue and East 40th Street at 6:15 p.m., police said.

He then beat her with a 2x4, police sources said.

"I ran outside and saw her bleeding, but the person who did it was already gone," said Willie Lopez, a concierge at the nearby Courtyard Marriott.

"I only saw her screaming and bleeding on the floor. When somebody screams that badly, something's wrong."

The woman was rushed to Bellevue Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.

Lineaux was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

It was unclear what motivated the attack or the extent of the victim's injuries.
