MANHATTAN — Governors Island will close for construction on Fridays for the next two seasons, but will remain open on Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays, a statement by the Trust for Governors Island announced.

The former military base, which features 150 acres of city parkland, will undergo a $150 million overhaul beginning in 2012 to create more green spaces, two baseball fields and a hammock grove.

Governors Island is normally open to the public Fridays through Sundays, plus holiday Mondays, from late May to late September. But the island will close on Fridays for the next two seasons "to facilitate construction," the statement said.

The Trust said it will compensate for the Friday closures by extending open hours to Saturday nights in June, providing "an opportunity for a diverse array of arts and cultural groups to provide proposals for programming."

The historic houses in Nolan Park and Colonels Row will be closed for repairs in 2012, though some of the larger buildings will remain open and available for special events, according to the statement.

Guided tours of the historic district, available Wednesday through Friday, and park ranger programs, offered on Saturdays and Sundays, will continue during construction, the statement noted.

Governors Island renovations, the plans for which can be found here, are expected to conclude in 2013.
