As Temperatures Fall, Autumn Jackets Come Out of the Closet

By Patrick Michael Hughes | October 5, 2011 7:57am | Updated on October 5, 2011 7:58am

Cooler October temperatures are bringing some long-overdue outerwear to the streets of Manhattan, and the strongest color statement for this season is gunmetal gray — with touches of cognac (a rich brown) and even mallard (that's the current name for the greens you're seeing.)

The sportswear details carried through from the New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 — nylon utility pulls, D-ring accessories and zippers — are fashion's nod to the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games.

Street Chic also notes fashion looking to the past. It has been nearly 20 years since Marc Jacobs' groundbreaking Grunge Collection for Perry Ellis, and fashion’s new generation of 20-year-olds has reclaimed the trend with a more luxe and groomed edge.

We noticed re-engineered plaids with contrasting plackets, vintage leather jackets with woven details and long jackets with contrasting, conversational print blocking. The difference: this time around? It's a more tailored, fitted silhouette.
