Wednesday October 5 - GIG OF THE WEEK
Fresh from a stunning performance at the ATP festival in Asbury Park, Portishead hit the Hammerstein Ballroom for a rare New York appearance. Although Portishead has been together since forming in Bristol, UK, in 1991, they've only recorded three studio albums, 2008's "Third" being the most recent. In 1998, Portishead released a live album recorded in New York called "Roseland NYC Live" with the New York Philharmonic orchestra.

Also tonight: Toronto-based techno producer Deadmau5 plays Roseland Ballroom. (Also on Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday.)

Thursday October 6
Petty Fest has turned in to an annual Tom Petty love-in with various notable artists such as Norah Jones, Jesse Malin and members of the bands Fountains Of Wayne and The Hold Steady paying tribute to the classic American rock and roller. Don't expect to see the man himself there, however. At The Bowery Ballroom.

Also tonight: A Place to Bury Strangers set sail aboard the Half Moon Boat, departing 8:00pm from East 23rd St & FDR Drive.
Bryan Ferry features tracks from his new album "Olympia" at the Beacon Theatre.
Ever changing Montreal based post-rock and experimental music collective Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra play Le Poisson Rouge.

Friday October 7
George Lewis Jr. is the clever man behind Twin Shadow - born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Florida. His 2010 album 'Forget' was produced by Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear. In support, Diamond Rings at Webster Hall.

Saturday October 8
Ladytron formed in 1999 in Liverpool and are on tour in support of their new album "Gravity The Seducer." At Terminal 5.
Also tonight: John Oates Band plays the Iridium Jazz Club (also Sunday).

Sunday October 9
From the west side of Detroit, Big Sean released his debut album "Finally Famous" in 2010. It featured cameos from Pharrell, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa and Pusha T. Best Buy Theater.
Also tonight: Evan Dando's longstanding indie band The Lemonheads rock The Bowery Ballroom. Also Monday.

Monday October 10
Fences is the creation of Seattle singer/songwriter Christopher Mansfield. His 2009 EP "The Ultimate Puke" was discovered by Sara Quin of the Canadian indie band Tegan & Sara. She ended up producing, recording, and adding vocals to his debut self-titled album. In support, Uh Huh Her at Irving Plaza.

Tuesday October 11
"Let Your Hair Down" is the Steve Miller Band's latest album, released earlier this year. It is a companion album to 2010's "Bingo" album — both records explore Steve Miller's blues roots. At the Beacon Theatre.

Also tonight: Alt-metal combo Helmet formed in New York City in 1989 and broke up in 1998. They reformed in 2004, but only Page Hamilton (vocalist and lead guitar) has been a consistent member. Their most recent album "Seeing Eye Dog" was released last year and even features a Beatles cover ("And Your Bird Can Sing"). At The Bowery Ballroom.
Progressive jazz icons Pat Metheny Group team up with with bassist Larry Grenadier at Blue Note Jazz Club.
