MANHATTAN — A water main break forced a stretch of the Henry Hudson Parkway to close on the Upper West Side Saturday afternoon, snarling traffic for blocks.

The southbound lanes of the parkway, from 96th to 79th streets were closed around 1:15 p.m. because of a "water condition," according to the city's Office of Emergency Management.

A spokeswoman for the city's Department of Environmental Protection said that a 12-inch main had broken and that repairs could take hours.

"It could take up to eight hours to clear because there might be water under the asphalt that they need to clear," said Officer David Gerena of the 24th Precinct.

Heavy delays were expected in the area.

The DEP spokeswoman said that crews from the agency were working on the leak and were expected to hand off the project to a contractor.

No water customers were affected as of Saturday afternoon.

Department of Transportation crews were also on hand assessing the roadway, but there were no immediate signs of damage, she said.
