Betsey Johnson Girls Spice Up Lincoln Center for Fashion Week

By Della Hasselle | September 13, 2011 7:16am

LINCOLN CENTER — The women who work at Betsey Johnson spiced up Lincoln Center when they appeared en masse, dressed head-to-toe in the designer's signature gothic-inspired style for her Fashion Week presentation.

The edgy couture featured corseted dresses, sheer, lacy tops, stark red lips and teetering heels. Many of the girls proudly displayed tattoos and dark, dyed hair or shaved heads, a look not seen everyday during the highscale shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Other Betsey Johnson looks included classic black-and-white dresses, floral prints and billowing skirts.

"You can really see how eclectic her designs are when you see us together all at once," Pennsylvania store manager Mary Hamilton, 28, said as she waited for Johnson's presentation to begin Monday evening, wearing a black and white dress, fishnets and a dramatic necklace.

"It makes you feel happy and stylish and feminine and funky," she added.

Manager Athena Brown, who works at the Columbus Avenue store on the Upper West Side, added that the fact that all the women wore Betsey Johnson's designs to her show, and purposefully made a statement by coming together, was a testament to what kind of company the designer runs.

"We're like a family," Brown, 31, said.

Brown added that the women who work for Betsey Johnson are inspired by her clothes, and that's why they're so tight-knit.

"It's really beautiful stuff. She outdoes herself every time," Brown added. "Wearing her clothes, it's like playing dress-up every day."

Others agreed.

"Are you kidding me? It's all about the attitude," Candias Henderson, 26, said, wearing a floral dress with Johnson's logo shaved on her head.

"We're the attitude. It's great. We're the bad kids in school — that's what they call us."
