Hurricane Irene Playlist Gathering Strength on Twitter

By Della Hasselle | August 27, 2011 3:41pm

MANHATTAN — The ultimate Hurricane Irene playlist is gathering strength on Twitter, with songs that reference hurricanes, storms and rain.

The hashtag #hurricaneplaylist brings up everything from time-honored classics to more obscure songs ranging from gospel to rap to rock.

Of course, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" by Scorpions made the playlist, as did "Irene, Goodnight," by Leadbelly.

"Blame it on the Rain," by Milli Vanilli was pulled from the dusty tape deck of history. Other choice tracks were "The Tide is High" by Blondie, "Public Service Announcement" by Jay-Z, "Storm Coming" by Gnarls Barkley, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Hurricane Drunk" by Florence and the Machine, and Rain on Me by Ashanti.

Others suggested "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, "Survivor" by Destiny's Child, "Make it Rain," by Fat Joe and "Umbrella" by Rihanna.

Other favorites include "Rock the Boat" by Aaliyah,  and "So Central Rain" by the Rolling Stones, and, somehow, "It's Raining Men," by Weather Girls.

One person, anticipating the storm's end, suggested "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.
