Potbelly Sandwich Shop to Fill Stomachs in Union Square

By DNAinfo Staff on August 16, 2011 3:43pm

MANHATTAN — Potbelly Sandwich Shop, the raved-about sub chain that originated in Chicago, continues to make inroads into Manhattan's lunch scene.

The company, which opened its first Manhattan location last June, will come to East 17th Street in mid-October, Potbelly’s New York Market Manager Chris Flett confirmed.

The 22 East 17th St. site was once home to the mojito-slinging Cuban chain Havana Central, which reportedly shuttered the location last spring.

Potbelly welcomed throngs of downtown office workers to the opening of its Financial District location — its first in the Big Apple — earlier this summer.

A second Manhattan shop opened near Grand Central Terminal in July, and a third is set to debut inside 30 Rockefeller Center on Aug. 24.

More Potbelly locations are planned for Midtown West at Seventh Avenue and West 39th Street and down the street from Empire State Building at Fifth Avenue and 35th Street, Flett said.

In total, the chain expects to open five New York City hubs by the end of 2011 and an additional eight to 10 locations during 2012, according to the market manager.

Flett said the city offered "a terrific market for expansion."

"Potbelly offers what New Yorkers look for in a sandwich shop," he added.

The 34-year-old sandwich shop is known for its toasted subs, freshly-blended milkshakes and folksy antique-store decor sometimes with live music performed from a small nook on a lofted stage.
